Deep cleaning and scaling

A deep cleaning (also known as scaling and root planing) is often the initial step in treatment of gingivitis and periodontal disease. The objective of this non-surgical treatment is to remove the plaque and bacteria that are causing disease and gingival inflammation.

4-6 weeks after completing the scaling and root planing a reevaluation appointment will be scheduled. At this appointment, Dr. Dempsey will meet with you to evaluate and review your healing.

For some patients, scaling and root planing is the only treatment that is needed to stabilize periodontal disease. However, more complex cases may require additional treatment in order to obtain maintainable and lasting results.

What To Expect

If after scaling and root planing the desired results are achieved, then a professional maintenance plan is started. You will always be more succeptible to further periodontal breakdown, so regular maintenance and home care are essential. We will work with you to design a supportive periodontal therapy plan that will give you an excellent chance of keeping your teeth for a lifetime
