Gum grafting

Receding gums can be caused by several different factors including aggressive brushing, factitious habits, periodontal disease and “thin” gums. When recession occurs, the body loses a natural defense that protects the teeth from bacterial penetration and trauma.

It is critical to realize, when recession is present not only is there a loss of protective gum, but there is also loss of underlying bone. If recession is allowed to continue there is increased risk of sensitivity, cavity formation, mobility and tooth loss.

Benefits of treatment:

·       Increased comfort

·       Better esthetics

·       Restored gum health

What To Expect

A small pouch is made at the site being treated, and either donor tissue or your own tissue is gently placed in the pouch. This “new” gum tissue is then secured in place and allowed to heal so that it covers the exposed tooth root and increases the amount of thick protective gum.
